Hendrix-Murphy Programs in Literature and Language
Faculty Opportunities

Hendrix faculty enhance and enrich literary and linguistic education at Hendrix through opportunities for professional development with individual and group travel and project grants, as well as workshops and classroom materials. Application forms are available at the links listed below, or contact Henryetta Vanaman (vanaman@hendrix.edu or 450-4597) for more information.

Murphy Away Projects (MAP). This program supports off-campus student-faculty projects that focus on literature and language around the globe, including the United States. The program also offers faculty development support and a unique chance to mentor student research in ways previously only in the hard sciences. Each project trip may include one or two faculty members and up to six students. Proposals for projects ranging in cost from $200 to $20,000 are welcome.

Faculty Sabbatical Stipends. This program offers stipends of up to $20,000.00 to help support approved faculty sabbatical projects that are related to literature and language.

Program Grants. There are two types of major Hendrix-Murphy Program grants: annual and three-year programs. All programs must focus on literature and language but may involve other disciplines as well.

Transitions. This course extends the paths students began with "Journeys" and "Explorations," courses in their first semester. This senior- and junior- level course anticipates the transition from college to graduate and professional schools, careers, and other positions of intellectually rigorous leadership.

Other ways the Foundation supports faculty include the following:

Workshops. Faculty retreats and workshops throughout the year (1) examine curricular and other issues in the English Department (2) explore how to evaluate written work by students with learning challenges, and (3) learn, along with students, advanced dramatic techniques in the Theatre Arts and Dance Department.

English Department Video Materials. Films and other audio-visual materials enhance teaching the literature of Garcia Lorca, Aristophanes, Moliére, and Chekhov, as well as other materials in film studies classes.

Foreign Language Resources. Books, films, music, journal subscriptions, and audiovisual equipment complement a growing collection of materials used to teach foreign languages and cultures. Other funding supports special experiences in textual transmission and bookbinding and classroom visits from a native French speaker.

New Faculty Resources. Foreign Language and English Departments set aside funds for books and other resources for new faculty in film studies and classics.
