Dr. Jennifer Peszka Video Interview

Dr. Jennifer Peszka, associate professor of psychology at Hendrix, comments on her study of the effects of sleeping habits on grades. The study has drawn state and national attention, including being featured in a June 2009 edition of Time magazine.

Dr. Peszka discusses initial results of a study on the effects of playing console and computer games on the sleep habits of young adults.

I have a daughter going off to college and was wondering what effects all of today's gadgets will have on her school work. The first thing affected looks like will be her sleep, which will affect everything else. Thanks for the information. Maybe we can discuss before she goes off to school

I know for a fact what time my body usually winds down for sleep on a given day and there is definitely a change in my level of sleepiness if I have been watching tv or surfing online for an extended period of time prior to bedtime.

Some of my best test scores came right after a night of little sleep.

Of course I was up all night cramming, so maybe that was part of it.

Of course playing console and computer games affect your sleeping habits. And that's definitely not a good thing. Everybody should know how to control the other activities in order to get a good sleep at night. You get the best results on tests when you are fresh and relaxed. Not when you are tired!

Way too many distractions now days for kids, mainly the online factors that are taking up way too much time from a students day to day life.Such as facebook for example or online gaming which has hooked me. I spend 4 hours every night playing when i could be doing way more productive things like sleeping so i can concentrate in class.

The effects of computer screens and other screens from electronic media upsets our circadian rhythms so no surprise that it messes up sleep patterns. Winding down routines are great and really do help. One hour switch off before bedtime is not a bad rule to implement!

While I was in college, it became a vicious cycle with several friends of mine; video games, Starbucks, pizza. They got very little sleep because they were so mentally exhausted from the video games that they couldn't relax. The coffee certainly didn't help. Finally, the poor sleep along with the pizza (poor nutrition) caused them to put on between 25 and 75 pounds of weight they didn't carry at the beginning of school.

I always need to read, mostly fiction, before being able to wind down before sleep. If I use the computer it takes me a long time to get to sleep. An e-ink screen such as on a Kindle is different though.

From a social perspective, gaming can lead student to become introverted and this can affect the rest of their lives. If they are restless before bed as as result of the game, this leads to bottled up emotions,anger and frustration. Best thing to do is no technology before bed - at least an hour - read some spiritual books.

Coffee, energy drinks, and constant stimulation. No wonder we live in a dangerous sleep deprived world. I use an iphone ap that puts binaural audio tones in each ear, I can fall asleep in 90 seconds in nearly every situation. But Dr Jennifer is so right, if we don't look after ourselves we have no one to blame.

I agree. Psychology has always been an interest of mine. I also think that students should limit the amount of time spent playing video games. I know that some people use them as a method of relaxation. But, when it interferes with a person's health, boundaries need to be put in place.

I think the invention of electricity has dramatically changed how people behave to-day. For many thousands of years people went to bed with sunset and got up with sunrise as most of them didn't really have a choice. As days were short in fall and winter season, people used to get more sleep, kind of preparing for spring/summer season, when they would be more active because of longer days and crops to harvest. But, even in summer time, if you didn't have access to light, you would be in bed after 10 pm.
Now we can spend all night working on our computers or watching movies, or playing games. You name it.
The dramatic effect of the invention of electricity on our health is yet to be accessed, but all that I can say now is that it's a blessing and punishment at the same time.

Hard to believe.

I doubt there may be a problem with anxiety when gaming, in fact I would say it probably decreases anxiety in a way.

But something to be studied next is why the addiction to gaming? I am sure there is a very deep story behind that.

I think that this study on gaming sleep or no sleep in college students is interesting.The fact that we can control our kids gaming habits and that only one hour a day is the recommended view rate is a goal I personally need to set for my child.

Great study, I've been a gamer for years and I know I have bad sleeping habits because of it. It usually takes me awhile just to fall asleep and I rarely get more then 6 hours of sleep a night when playing for more then 1hr in the day.

I would of thought that really they would lose a lot more than 1 hour of sleep as I have heard and know of many people who stay up most of the night, especially with more and more online gaming these days.

I totally agree with Dr.Jennifer Peszka that youth now a days is spending most of their time online and they got addicted to it, It's just like some body gets addicted of cocaine and get cant out of it. The only difference is with cocaine one can tell it's harming them and they might consult a doctor or some body on their behalf does it and there is a chance that they might start a new life all over again, but with being so addicted to games and social media and stuff like this, they don't even know how much sleeping less is effecting them. It has huge side effects and disadvantages on health. It's like slow poisoning and you don't even know what is happening to you. Please do listen to Dr. Jeniffer and start sleeping properly. You need at least 8 hours of sleep a day.

I have read articles about the effects of video games etc. But none about sleep studies...I know my husband and my son are avid gamers, I do think that some nights it does affect there sleep. I do limit my sons time on gaming. Thanks for the info.

It really is becoming a problem with our children and parents who feel like they need to use video games and TV to keep children occupied. Even the auto makers are contributing with the built in backseat TV's.
