Disabling and Enabling Gatekeeper for Mac OS X

In Mac OS X 10.8, a new feature called Gatekeeper was added. This prevents the installation of lesser-known applications on the computer in order to prevent the installation of malware and other unwanted software. However, this can also prevent the installation of legitimate applications as well. In order to install these applications, temporarily disabling Gatekeeper will allow you to do so.

NOTE: Please re-enable Gatekeeper once you have installed the program. Gatekeeper only deals with the installation and not the running of applications.

Disabling Gatekeeper

  1. From the Apple menu, open the "System Preferences" application.
  2. Click on Security & Privacy > General tab.
  3. If the lock in the left-hand corner is locked, click on it, then enter your Mac's username and password. This may not be required.
  4. Click "Anywhere" under "Allow applications downloaded from:".
  5. If you followed Step 3, please click the lock in the left-hand corner to return it to its locked state.
  6. Close "System Preferences".
