KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 15) -- Hendrix College came back from a two-run deficit to earn its fourth consecutive victory, a 3-2 win over Spring Arbor University, before suffering a 5-2 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University on Monday at the Rebel Spring Games’ Fortune Road Complex.
Hendrix improves to 8-6 on the season and will now face Nazareth College and Framingham State University on Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors will take Wednesday off for some fun in the sun and then finish the road trip with two games on Thursday.
Hendrix was held scoreless for the first four innings of the opener and Spring Arbor took an early lead by scoring one run in the first and second innings.
The Warriors tied it up with two runs in the fifth inning when senior C Christina Byler (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) cleared the bases on a triple to left center.
Hendrix plated the go-ahead run in the sixth when sophomore LF Trace Grinnell (Searcy, Ark./Izard Cty. Consolidated) reached on an error, moved to second junior DP Ellen Burr’s (Jacksonville, Ark./H.S.) sacrifice bunt and raced home on first year SS Ryan Bracken’s (Indianola, Iowa/H.S.) base knock to right field.
Sophomore RHP Liz Vaughan (Garland, Texas/Greenhill H.S.) improved to 3-2 with the complete game victory. She scattered eight hits, allowed two earned runs, on walk and struck one batter out.
The Warriors fell behind early again in the second game by allowing Illinois Wesleyan one run in the first and two runs in the second. The Titans scored insurance runs in their fourth and sixth at bats to reach their final mark.
Grinnell reached on an error in the third and scored Burr tagged a double to send her plateward for Hendrix’s first run. Sophomore 2B Sydney Selby (Monticello, Ark./H.S.) smashed a leadoff homer in the fifth to give the Warriors their second and final run.
Junior RHP Jaclyn Herrera (Mount Vernon, Texas/H.S.) fell to 2-2 with the complete game loss. She allowed just seven hits, two earned runs, five free passes and fanned a pair of batters. Hendrix committed five errors and tallied just four hits in the contest.
