WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 16) -- Washington & Jefferson College first year attacker Joseph Eck outscored Hendrix College 5-2 in the first half to help lead the Presidents to a 14-6 victory over the Warriors on Tuesday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium. Hendrix remains winless at 0-5 on the season.
Washington & Jefferson (2-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first seven minutes before first year midfielder Connor Corley (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich H.S.) scored Hendrix’s first goal with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Eck netted his third goal of the quarter 27 seconds later and a score from first year attacker Thomas Starr made it a 4-1 game after 15 minutes of play.
The Presidents added six unanswered goals to the second quarter for a 10-1 advantage and Corley put his second ball past the keeper off another assist from first year attacker Ben Nelson (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll H.S.) with 4:45 left in the half. Washington & Jefferson took a 10-2 lead at halftime.
The Presidents struck first out of the break until Hendrix junior midfielder Tim Wojcik (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch H.S.) tallied two unassisted goals to make it 11-4 at the end of the third.
Corley fired his third score in to kick off the fourth quarter with before Washington & Jefferson stretched the gap with two goals, 13-5. Sophomore midfielder Alex Wilkinson (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge H.S.) scored the Warriors’ final goal off an assist from junior midfielder Jeff Appleton (Houston, Texas/Stratford H.S.) with 5:17 remaining in regulation. Sophomore attacker Mark Ringeling netted his second goal of the fourth quarter for the Presidents’ final goal with 4:10 left on the scoreboard.
Washington & Jefferson doubled the Hendrix’s shot total, 38-19, and also used a 49-37 ground ball advantage. First year goalie Donald Kirby made six saves for the Presidents, while sophomore goalie Keith Clemens (Hanson, Mass./Nantucket H.S.) turned back 13 shots.
Sophomore defender James Hanson (Tuscon, Ariz./Catalina Foothills H.S.) led Hendrix with nine ground balls and Wojcik was 8-of-15 in faceoffs.
