CONWAY, Ark. (Sept. 5) -- Hendrix College junior Taylor LaFortune (pictured) and first year Kelley Rappe both scored a goal in the Warriors 2-0 season opening victory over Sewanee-The University of the South on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.
Hendrix picked up its second-straight season opening win and avenged a 3-2 double overtime loss to Sewanee in last year’s Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) post-season tournament. Today’s contest will not count towards SCAC standings.
LaFortune (Schertz, Texas/St. Mary’s Hall) scored the Warriors’ first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Lauren Thorburg (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran H.S.) in a penalty corner with 2:25 left in the first half.
Rappe (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre H.S.) then scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from junior Abby Coleman (North Kingstown, R.I./H.S.) with 26:47 remaining in regulation.
The Hendrix defense held strong and denied four penalty corner attempts from Sewanee in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Havens (New Canaan, Conn./St. Lukes H.S.) posted her third career shutout with eight saves (two in the first half, six in the second half) on the day.
