CONWAY, Ark. (Nov. 15) -- University of the Ozarks collected 42 points in the paint and used a 34 point effort from sophomore forward Blake Mitchem to earn its second straight season-opening win, 95-76, over Hendrix College on Sunday afternoon at Grove Gymnasium.
Ozarks shot 66 percent from the field on the day and never looked back after taking the final lead change with 11:29 remaining in the first half. Mitchem was shot 15-of-23, pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead the Eagles. Sophomore point guard Colby Woolverton tallied 28 points and was 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Junior guard Andre Williams added 18 points and nine rebounds to the mix.
Hendrix shot 33 percent from the field and took advantage of Ozarks’ mishaps with 19 points off turnovers. The Warriors were led by senior point guard Janson Hightower (Owasso, Okla./H.S.) with 12 points and 11 assists. Senior guard Cal Rose (Blytheville, Ark./H.S.) posted a team-best 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, including three long balls in the first half. Sophomore forward Nick Heathscott (Conway, Ark./H.S.) also scored 12 points, while sophomore guard Chris Goodman (Fort Worth, Texas/Keller Central H.S.) scored 11 points.
Hendrix’s 2008-09 season opening loss to Ozarks spurred a six-game win streak for Hendrix and sent the Warriors on to 11 wins in their first 14 contests. The Eagles hold an 8-6 series edge over the Warriors since the 1992-93 season when Hendrix joined the NCAA Division-III ranks.
