MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Nov. 22) -- The Hendrix College women’s basketball team opened its 2009 regular season with a pair of wins at the Rhodes College Tip-Off Classic this weekend. The Warriors won a 71-63 affair against Westminster College on Friday and then posted a 77-41 blowout win over Greenville College on Saturday.
Head coach Thad McCracken led Hendrix to its second straight 2-0 start to a season and picked up his first victories as a head coach. The Warriors will look to improve their record when they travel to University of the Ozarks on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. CT.
Hendrix shot 45 percent from the field against Westminster and nailed nine three pointers to hold on for the season-opening win. Junior forward Christina Byler (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) led the Warriors with 16 points and five rebounds, while senior forward Chelsey White (Dardanelle, Ark./H.S.) scored 13 and knocked down a pair of three-bombs.
The Warriors never trailed against Greenville and eventually pushed their lead to a game-high 37 with 6:36 left in regulation. Hendrix scored 34 points on the Panther’s 34 turnovers. The Warriors’ bench outscored the Panthers, 33-9, and Hendrix tallied 34 points in the paint. The Warriors had four players in double digits, with Byler leading the way at 17 points. White added 11 points, while sophomore guard Anna Roane (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Preparatory) and sophomore forward Caty Hensy (Fort Worth, Texas/H.S.) tallied 10 points apiece. Sophomore guard Jordan Henderson (North Little Rock, Ark./Central Ark. Christian H.S.) dished out a team-high four assists.
